Youth Beef Spokesperson Team

The 3rd annual Northeast Quarter Youth Beef Spokesperson’s Contest (YBSC) was held on Saturday, April 21st. Two students participated in the competition and spoke about their favorite beef topic. Students who will make up the Northeast Quarter YBS Team include Megan Thormodsgard of Briggsdale speaking about “Agriterrorism” and Tyler Thormodsgard of Briggsdale speaking titled “To Work or Not to Work”.

The Southeast Quarter winners are Junior Division, Michael Batson from Westcliffe. His speech is titled “Grass Fed Beef” and the Senior division winner is Lauren Miguaccio from Payton. She spoke on “The Differences in Small, Commercial and Large Feeders”.

The Northwest/Southwest Quarters Contest was held in Fruita, during the FFA days. The winner of the Junior Division was Kaylee Mecham from Rangely. Her speech was about “The Effects of Drought on the Beef Industry”.  The Senior Division winner, Hanna Hightower, is from Collbran. Her speech is on safe handling of meat and is titled “Food Born Elements in Meat.”

The Youth Beef Spokesperson Team members are required to attend one state Cattlewomen’s meeting to present their speeches to attendees. Tyler and Megan Thormodsgard , along with Hanna Hightower spoke in Loveland at the joint CCA/CCW/CLA luncheon on Monday, June 11. Michael Batson, Lauren Miguaccio and Kaylee Mecham will speak in January at the winter CCW/CCA convention.  The team members can also voluntarily attend numerous other state Cattlewomen’s events and they are encouraged to attend any local Cattlewomen’s events.

If your local is interested in having any member of this dynamic team speak at your next meeting, please contact:

  • Steph Harmon, Northeast Quarter contest at (303) 910-6886
  • Gerri Collette, Southeast Quarter contest, (719) 275-5552
  • Kris Melnikoff, Northwest/Southwest Quarter contest at (970) 487-0119

CCW expects the students will put their school priorities and safety before any speaking opportunities. The YBSC encourages junior high and high school age students to speak confidently about the beef industry in a comfortable, safe and non-confrontational environment so that later, they can speak confidently about beef to those outside the beef industry. the students in this contest were very confident speakers and will without a doubt become future leaders and speakers on behalf of the beef industry.  Each student will receive a commemorative belt buckle and reimbursement of travel for up to $200 per engagement. CCW welcomes any donations from local groups and businesses to help fund this contest and related travel expenses.

If you have any questions regarding the YBS contest, funding or speaking arrangements, please feel free to contact our state coordinator, Sallie Miller at salliemiller@agloan.com  The Colorado CattleWomen and the Youth Beef Spokesperson Team wishes to thank the sponsors who helped with the funding for this contest.
