Moffat County Cattlewomen
August 23, 2015
It has been a busy year for the Moffat County Cattlewomen!
In November, members decorated a Christmas tree for the Festival of Trees. The ornaments featured local brands and provided a great opportunity to support local ranchers within the community. Our tree won 3rd place and a cash prize.
In February, Moffat County Cattlewomen (MCCW) supported Moffat County Farm Bureau’s, grocery store promotion. Shoppers were given the opportunity to answer questions regarding agriculture for a chance to win a cart of groceries, including beef provided by MCCW. We also provided the beef byproducts board.
Our biggest event is hosting 4th Grade Ag Day in May. With the theme, “You just can’t have an Ag-less day!” 4th graders from all area schools learned the importance of agriculture in Moffat County. The kids first watched a locally produced video featuring agriculture in Moffat County. The classes are then rotated through various stations, a few which included learning opportunities about beef byproducts, egg production, sheep and wool production, brands, historic agriculture/homesteading, ATV safety, electricity safety, wildlife identification, and water cycles. A trip to the barn allowed students to see live cattle, horses, sheep, goats, swine and chickens. New this year was an all day schedule which allowed more stations for the students to visit. The Colorado Farm Bureau Ag in Motion barns were also featured at this year’s Ag Day! Prior to Ag Day, teachers are provided with Cattle in Colorado History materials to supplement their Colorado History Curriculum. An essay contest this year allowed students the opportunity to write about agriculture in their lives. Our prize money from the Festival of Trees was used to sponsor the essay contest!
MCCW hosted the Craig Chamber of Commerce Mixer in June. Each month a chamber member hosts a mixer. Cattlewomen organized and hosted the mixer with sponsors American Ag Credit, Mountain West Insurance, Pepsi, Murdoch’s and Stockman’s Liquor. Approx. 85 people attended the mixer and enjoyed HorDourves including meatballs and deserts from cattlewomen. Beef recipes and promotion items were available and club members had a great opportunity to discuss agriculture with community members. The brand board was also on display.
The Moffat County Fair was held Aug 3-8. The Cattlewomen sponsor several events at the fair including Beef Breeding Awards and the Cowboy Baby Contest. Promotion items along with the brand and animal by products boards were also on display.
Taste of Home Cooking School, Sept 14 at Moffat County High School in Craig. MCCW will have a booth promoting beef!
