Letter from CCW 2016-2018 President, Heather Stinnett
July, 2016
Hello Colorado CattleWomen! My name is Heather Stinnett and I am pleased to be serving as your newly elected state president. It’s an awesome responsibility and I look forward to working with you over the next two years. You will notice I did say two years...
At our summer meeting this past June in Colorado Springs the board approved a change to our by-laws that eliminates the position of vice-president elect and makes a 2 year term each out of the president and vice president positions. Now, this isn’t finalized. It will require a vote from the general membership, you, but if approved we hope this will help keep positions filled on the board of directors for CCW. We have a strong membership here in Colorado but when it comes to participation on the state level, it can be difficult for ladies to take the next step. For a vast majority of us we are juggling husbands, children, grandchildren, jobs, ranches, you name it. Our plates are full and accepting responsibility for one more thing is just not an option for many women. So when it comes to filling positions every year it is a struggle to find women open to the job. Especially to fill the jobs of CCW vice president, president elect and president as they require the officer to have served on the board for at least one year prior. We hope this change will give us some room to negotiate finding new blood for the board but it also allows for some fluid motion of the jobs themselves. By that I mean many ladies have commented after serving one year as president they were really just getting the hang of things and the second year would have been much more manageable. Should the general membership vote against these changes, no harm no fowl, we will return to our previous way of electing officers. You will find an update on the by-laws change from our state secretary Cindy Mangus in this newsletter. Please be sure to read though it and have your local send in its vote!
Enough business let me tell you about myself and my family. I am from Burlington, CO and am a member of the Kit Carson County CattleWomen. If you ever actually try to track me down however, you will see that my husband, kids and I actually live just across the state line in Kansas. Technically, yes, we are from Kansas but we cross the state line out here the way most people cross the street. We tell people it’s just where we sleep! My husband Scott works for CSU Extension as a 4-H Youth Development extension associate and I am a stay at home mom and my dad’s hired hand. My dad summer’s 500 head of cow/calf pairs up and down the state line and the kids and I take care of the cattle on the Kansas side of the operation. Faxon, our son, is 2 and our daughter Tierney is 9 months. My two jobs as mom and hired hand are the exact reason I was able to take a step up with the board this year. I am very fortunate to have a wonderful husband who is extremely supportive of my endeavors and a boss who is pretty easy to get along with, most of the time!
Wheat harvest is in full swing here on the east side, the wind is blowing and it’s hot, but that also means the 4th of July is just around the corner. Have a wonderful Independence Day Colorado ladies and I will see you soon!
